Could not have put it better! I often wonder whether the brutes moshing around at these concerts actually even care about the music. It just seems like a scene thing.

I agree with you man. I like Underoath and Chiodos, but I can only listen to them in very small doses. After 3-4 songs I've had enough. Their musicianship is impressive, but like you said, they just try to pack too much shit into each song. Plus, no part of any song repeats, and so much shit changes throughout one track, it makes it really hard to identify it. I listen to any of those bands albums and can't pick out a single track when I'm done…and I'm a musician myself. It's like “that song that had 4 breakdowns and 5 tempo changes was cool….oh wait, that was all of them.” To me, it's music that is trying to impress other musicians….that's it. Some of the greatest songs are often criticized by music nerds as being “too simple” – these are the same people writing these ridiculous songs. They want the guitar critic to listen to it and go “did you hear that riff? And he played it in 5/9 time!” – meanwhile, the other 99.9% of the world could care less because the song as a whole sucks.
